Importance of Statistics in Early Education

Did you know that the data that is produced every day as of 2020 is around 79 zettabytes and it is expected to rise to 181 zettabytes by 2025? This equals an increase of 229%.

The world is changing rapidly, as of April 2021, 60% of the world’s population is online. The amount of data that is generated is huge. It is important to quantify this huge data to make it easy to understand and analyze.

Data analysis helps in making problem-solving easier and more accurate, making it error-free. Therefore it is crucial to analyze this data for the improvement of current and future generations.

Kids are the future analysts, and to analyze this big data in real-time, statistics comes into the picture. Statistics is one tool that helps to quantify, analyze, interpret the data and find solutions for problems in different scenarios. This entire process of analyzing the data begins with collecting the data that is generated.

A recent study shows that around 2.5 quintillion bytes of data are generated every day across the world as of October 2021. And to analyze this data can be a cakewalk for a person with a good hand in statistics.

Statistics used only for data analysis can be a false assumption, as its uses are extended to testing the validity of theories. A few examples are a calculation of exit polls for elections, prediction of winning of a team before a cricket match, and many more.

What Is Statistics?

Statistics is the science concerned with developing and studying methods for collecting, analyzing, interpreting and presenting empirical data. It is an instrument that is a base for many, from data science to basic calculation of the run rate of your favorite cricket player.

Types Of Statistics

Statistics is majorly classified into two types:

  1. Descriptive Statistics: It is all about summarizing the data that is collected and is represented pictorially like graphs, and charts.
  2. Inferential Statistics: Whereas, Inferential Statistics is the next step of Descriptive Statistics; we derive the meaning of the data that is collected.

Applications Of Statistics

Statistics is one topic that is applied in subjects like Data Mining, Machine Learning, Mathematics, and Economics. It has an extended use into fields like

  • Education: Calculation of average score in a class, the average pass percentage of students, number of male and female students in five sections, and many more.
  • Research: Testing of hypothesis, Graphical representation, validating assumptions are a few examples.
  • Human resource planning: Prediction of uncertainties, calculating human requirement, Compensation planning are a few examples.
  • Investment planning: Buying of Stocks, Investment Planning, Budgeting and many more
  • Marketing: Comparison of trends, making Marketing strategies, Comparing performance with competitors, Comparison of sale figures with previous years and many more.

Importance Of Statistics For Kids

We are bound by many assumptions from an early age, and kids too are bound by assumptions about their surroundings and different situations. For instance, kids can try to predict the toss being heads or tails before a cricket match. For kids to make this prediction, probability is the tool they can use. Therefore, to gain clarity and validate their assumption right or wrong, statistics play a key role.

According to a study, kids start organizing information from the age of 7. This is the age when kids must be taught the use of statistics that in turn help kids to organize, interpret and present the data using graphs, charts, or any other form of pictorial representation.

Benefits Of Statistics For Kids

  • Engages kids With Curiosity: Kids don’t enjoy when they are just presented with some stats, rather they will enjoy only if they could calculate it on their own. For example the run rate of their favourite cricket player, or the game points of your favorite IPL team. Statistics for kids give the freedom to learn along with having fun with the topics.
  • Improves Kids Logical Reasoning: Statistics is the core for most of the calculations, kids who master this area, complex calculations and other calculations like probability will be a mere cakewalk. Hence, Statistics for kids’ improves logical reasoning.
  • Improves Kids Critical Thinking: Decision-making is a skill required in most of the areas and statistics for kids helps to explore that area as well. It helps kids to analyze the data given to them and form a decision based on the interpretation of the data. Therefore, Statistics helps kids’ improve their critical thinking.
  • Brush Up the Problem-solving Skills: The entire process of statistics helps kids in forming patterns and trying combinations of mathematical calculations, that can add a new perspective to solving and viewing problems. Hence, Statistics for kids help brush up their problem-solving skills.
  • Improves Decision Making: Statistics for kids helps to analyze the data, solve the problem and thereby make decisions based on the interpretation of data. Not only at the logical problem-solving level but also in general, helps in analyzing problems at a deeper level and making decisions wisely!
  • Boosts Cognitive Thinking in Kids: Statistics for kids’ helps in forming patterns, understanding the given data, analyzing the data, helps in improving the cognitive skills of kids’ improves the processing speed of information, memory, and focus of kids.
  • Kids can Integrate Statistics in Their Life for Fun: Statistics for kids’ can be a fun way over the traditional problem-solving method. For instance, kids can calculate and compare their height with that of their friends, or calculate the expenses of their pocket money.
  • Enhances Kids Creativity: Kids can present the data they have collected and analyzed pictorially through graphs, charts, pie diagrams, and many more. Presenting data in different shapes, designs, and patterns in different combinations can enhance your kids’ creativity, and help them to think outside the box.

Conclusion

Statistics is an aid and a crucial part of kids’ early education as it helps in developing kids’ left-brain essential for generalization and rationalization of analysis.
