7 Thinking Tips and Tricks in Addition

7 Thinking Tips and Tricks in Addition

Table of Contents

We don’t have to be experienced in the field of math to know that all age groups of people suffer to solve a math addition problem, mainly if they are large numbers but it becomes easier with a few tips and tricks in addition.

But those may be done quickly and easily without having to write anything down when adding two little items. For instance, when we work with money, compute our shopping bills, and determine the time, we apply addition often, even without realizing it.

It is a basic mathematical operation that individuals frequently experience in their daily lives.

What is Addition?

Addition is the process of combining sets of objects and has applications in all areas of life. Whenever two whole numbers are combined, the total amount or sum of those values is obtained. If two mangoes and three bananas are combined, then “2+3=5” is the mathematical expression for this observation (that is, “2 plus 3 is equal to 5”). We used the addition function on two integers, 2 and 3, to get the total, which is 5.

What is Addition?

Addition Symbol

Different symbols are used in mathematics. The addition is a symbol or a function that is used by everyone, from small kids to grown-up people. We saw adding two digits, 2 and 3, above. The symbol (+) brings together different numbers and completes the given statement if we observe the pattern of addition (2 + 3 = 5). One horizontal and one vertical line make up the addition symbol. It’s also known as the plus symbol (+) or the addition sign (+).

Addition Formula

The expression below is used to show what exactly is an addition:

Sum = Addend + Addend.

Addition Formula
  • The digits which are being used in the expression of addition are referred to as addends.
  • The final number after adding the addends is known as the sum of the addends.
  • While doing the addition plus(+) and is equal to(=) signs are used.
  • An addition is not only performed between two or three numbers or addends but also between several addends.

How to Solve Additional Problems?

The basic addition has always been easy for the kids but when the number of digits increases the more difficult kids find it. Parents search for tuition or online classes where their kids can learn addition easily.

The smaller numbers can be added easily while bigger numbers require splitting the numbers corresponding to place values, such as ones, tens, hundreds, thousands, etc. According to the place value system, we always start to add from the right side.

Tips and Tricks in Addition

After elementary children acquire fundamental number sense, addition is the first big mathematical step. And, just like with any beginning phase, it may be difficult. Here are a few “Tips & Tricks” which can be used while doing addition:

Tips and Tricks in Addition

1. Aim For Ten

If we have a digit that is close enough to the number 10, we can carry off from the other existing number so that it becomes 10.

Example – 1

9+ 6 = ?

Aim For Ten

Example – 2

8+ 7 = ?

Aim For Ten

2. Compensation Method

Round up the given number so it makes a total of 10 and then subtracts the extra added number, this method is called “compensation.”

Example – 1

19 + 18 = ?

Compensation Method

Example – 2

296 + 130  = ?

Compensation Method

3. Make it Double

When the numbers are the same or close enough to be the same, double it and then fix it. In simple terms, borrow that number so that it will be double that of the first number and later add or subtract the rest.

Example – 1

5 + 6 = ?

Make it Double

Example – 2

9 + 8 = ?

Make it Double

4. Count Upwards From A Number

Why choose the difficult way when it can be done most simply. Instead of adding from lowest to highest, try starting with the highest number.

Example – 1

9 + 3 = ?

Think “9 … 10, 11, 12”

Count Upwards From A Number

Example – 2

1 + 9 = ?

Count Upwards From A Number

5. Counting To Ten

Adding up the numbers which give the sum of 10, will make it always easy whether it’s adding the small number or the bigger numbers.

Example

5 + 7 + 8 + 5 + 2 = ?

Counting To Ten

6. Jumping Strategy

We may also count by twos or tens, or make whatever “jump” we desire to assist us in solving a computation.

Example

2 + 13 = ?

Jumping Strategy

7. Do The Tens Last

Break large numbers down into tens and units, then multiply by tens.

Example

25 + 3 = ?

Do The Tens Last

Conclusion

These strategies may appear cumbersome on paper, but you’ll discover that you can mentally add rapidly and precisely once you master them.
